Visas, documents, money

There are no particular surprises here. You will need the following documents to cross the Tanzanian border:

Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the planned end date of your stay in Tanzania. This also applies to temporary passports.

Visa

You can obtain a visa in two ways: upon entry, at the border (costs 100 USD) or before departure, by applying online (50 USD). The second option has two undeniable advantages: firstly, the online visa is half the price, and secondly, you will avoid a long queue at the stationary visa issuing point at the destination airport. Believe me, even half of the plane's passengers will be standing in this queue because they didn't bother to obtain a visa before arrival...

Money

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling, abbreviated as "TZS".

However, the US dollar (USD) is practically universally accepted, and even preferred. You will pay for the entire expedition in dollars. It's better to bring the entire amount in cash than to look for the rather rare ATMs on site to withdraw shillings.

NOTE. Tanzanians only accept US banknotes issued after 2007. You will not be able to pay with those issued earlier. To anyone, anywhere. So pay attention to your banknotes before flying to Tanzania! However, if you happen to have such "old" banknotes with you, all is not lost: you can exchange them for shillings, but at a bank.

Instead of US dollars, you can use (slightly less popular) EUROs.

You can pay with a payment card in some (larger) shops, restaurants or hotels. However, do not assume that this is a widespread, standard form of payment in Tanzania.

In local shops, markets or smaller towns, it may be more difficult to find places where you can pay with dollars. Therefore, it is worth having some Tanzanian shillings for small expenses. It is best to exchange about a hundred dollars for local shillings at the exchange office at the airport upon arrival, and this should be enough.
