Rongai Route
Day 1: Nalemuru Gate (1950m) to Simba Camp (2621m)
The first stage of the trek leads through the rainforest before transitioning into heathland. After approximately 4 hours of hiking, we reach Simba Camp, where we spend the first night.
Day 2: Simba Camp (2621m) to Kikelewa Camp (3679m)
On the second day, we continue climbing through heathland, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail remains relatively gentle. After a 15-kilometer trek lasting about 7 hours, we arrive at Kikelewa Camp, which offers breathtaking views of Kibo, the main peak of Kilimanjaro.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3679m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4303m)
Today’s climb is more demanding as we gain significant altitude. The 7-kilometer hike takes approximately 4 hours. Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located near a picturesque volcanic lake, offers spectacular scenery of the surrounding peaks. This day also serves as an important acclimatization opportunity.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4303m) to Kibo Huts (4703m)
We start early, leaving Mawenzi Tarn Camp and crossing the Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. From here, the summit of Kibo comes into view. We spend the night at Kibo Hut (4703m), our final stop before the summit attempt.
Day 5: Kibo Huts (4703m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and descent to Horombo Hut (3720m)
This is the most challenging and rewarding day—the summit push! We begin the ascent at midnight, covering approximately 19 km. Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. After taking in the views and capturing photos, we descend back to Kibo Huts for a short rest before continuing further down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Day 6: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)
On the final day, we descend through the rainforest, covering nearly 19 km. The trek concludes at Marangu Gate, where a small celebration takes place, and successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Afterward, we return to the hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
