Marangu Route

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

The trek begins at the park gate, leading through a lush rainforest before transitioning into vast heathlands. The 4-hour hike to Mandara Hut offers an opportunity for a short excursion to Maundi Crater if time and weather permit. Overnight accommodation is in A-frame wooden huts.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Today’s trek takes 5-6 hours, leading beyond the forest into open moorlands. Along the way, we pass beneath the rocky southern face of Mawenzi, one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic peaks, while enjoying stunning views of Kibo.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

A full day dedicated to acclimatization. A recommended hike towards Mawenzi Hut, passing the striking Zebra Rocks, takes about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down. This day significantly improves summit success rates.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)

A 6-hour trek leads to Kibo Hut, situated near the Saddle—a vast alpine desert with breathtaking views of both Kibo and Mawenzi. The trail becomes steeper as we approach Kibo. After an early dinner, we rest before the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m), then descent to Horombo Hut (3720m)

The summit attempt begins at midnight, requiring 6-7 hours to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebrating at the top, we descend to Kibo Hut for rest and a meal before continuing to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1980m)

A long but relatively easy descent through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, successful climbers receive their certificates before returning to the hotel for well-earned relaxation.
